This is a complete rare set with bonus prints of all of the 12 x 16 inch artwork from Volumes One, Two, and Three of the Portfolio of Fine Comic Art published by the National Cartoonists Society from 1978-1980. This is 35/1500 and several of the prints were only signed in the first 50 editions! 23 of the finest comic artists are represented in the Portfolio with 22 hand-signing and numbering their plates: Hal Foster (1892 - 1992, Prince Valiant), Will Eisner (1917 - 2005, The Spirit), Johnny Hart (1931 - 2007, B.C.), Barry Windsor-Smith (Conan the Barbarian), Jerry Robinson (Batman), Wally Wood (1927 - 1981, Mad), Milton Caniff (1907 - 1988, Terry and the Pirates), Harvey Kurtzman (1924 - 1993, Mad), John Severin (Mad), Russell Myers (Broom-Hilda), Jim Steranko (Nicky Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jack Kirby (1917 - 1994, Captain America), Jeffrey Jones (1944- 2011), Al Williamson (1931 - 2010, Flash Gordon), Burne Hogarth (1911 - 1996, Tarzan), Michael Kaluta (DC, Marvel), George Evans (1920 - 2001, aviation art), Berni Wrightson (horror comics), Jack Davis (Mad), Gil Kane (1926 - 2000, Green Lantern), Walt and Selby Kelly (1917 - 2005, Pogo, signed and numbered only by Selby), and Neal Adams (Marvel and DC, signed only).
In addition to help make the Portfolio special for the early subscribers who had a wait of several years there are the Volume Three bonus plates (unsigned) by Hal Foster (he hand colored his Plate from V1), Wally Wood, Burne Hogarth, Al Williamson, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman and Frank Frazetta (full color rough for the Clint Eastwood movie poster for The Gauntlet). We'll also include a fanzine from the publisher which documents the entire fascinating story behind the publication including dramatic lawsuits!
Printed with the best quality lithography available at the time on acid free Strathmore art paper these Plates look like the original art when matted and framed.
